Archibald Gardiner enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 12th October 1915 at Adelaide, South Australia. On his attestation form he gave his place of birth as Chalford, England, his age as 25 years 6 months, his occupation as a Labourer and his next of kin as his mother, Kate Gardiner, Uplands, Chalford Hill near Stroud, Gloucestershire, England. He was 5 feet 8 inches tall with blue eyes, light brown hair and a fair complexion.
On 2nd April 1916 he joined the 50th Battalion at Heliopolis. He proceeded to Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on 5th June 1916, disembarking in Marseilles on 12th June 1916. Archibald was killed in action on 16th August 1916 and was buried at Moquet Farm. It would appear that his grave disappeared during subsequent battles in the area and he is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial.
