Alexander Walter Cresswell was born in 1885. By 1911 he had been married to Rosina, aged 23, for 5 years and the couple were resident at Ashton Under Hill with their 1 year old son Leslie.

Alexander served as Private 17197 with the Gloucestershire Regiment, entering France on 30th September 1915. He was discharged to the army reserve after the war ended. He was awarded the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
