Arthur Reginald Couchman was born in Stoke Newington, London in 1893. he enlisted in Birmingham and went to France on 14th November 1915.

He volunteered in August 1914 and was drafted to France in the following year. He was in action in many important engagements on the Western Front, but owing to ill-health returned to England and was subsequently discharged in August 1916.
