Further Information About COMPSON Harold
Harold Compson lived at 23 Coventry Street, Stourbridge, and was employed at the leather works of Messrs Turney and Co. He enlisted in the Worcesters late in 1915 and was sent out to join the 9th Battalion in Mesopotamia. He would have seen serious action against Turkish troops in the advance up the Tigris to Baghdad which was captured in 1917. It was in the vicinity of this city that he was attending a Bombing School and was killed in an accident. This resulted from the premature explosion of a bomb. A letter to his parents told them that his funeral was attended by the Brigadier commanding the area, the Brigade Major, officers from the Bombing School and about a hundred men. Private Harold Compson was 22 years of age. His name is also commemorated on the St. Thomas’s and the Methodist church memorials.
