Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral under Powick as William Birchall.

Attended Worcester Royal Grammar School from 1906 to 1907.

At 3.35am on the morning of 8th August 1916, the Germans set off a mine under the parapet of the trench where the Royal Warwicks were serving. Lance Corporal Brickell was killed when a small body of German infantry attacked the trench immediately following the explosion.

The following report appears in the Kidderminster Times, 9th September 1916:
Lance Corporal William Alfred Brickell, 3522, 2nd/5th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment.  Eldest son of Mr & Mrs Brickell of Laurel Cottage, Callow End, Worcester. He volunteered shortly after the commencement of the war. Killed in action on 8th August 1916.
