John Barnett was born in Ashton Under Hill in 1887, the son of James and Elizabeth Barnett. In 1911 he was at home in the village with his parents and older sister Ada and he was employed as a garden labourer. John served as Private 16172, Gloucestershire Regiment, entering France on 16th March 1915. He survived the war and was transferred to the Army Reserve.
