Alfred Banford attested on 2nd September 1914 at Birmingham when he gave his age as 21 years, 8 months, his place of birth as Lozells, Birmingham and his occupation as a labourer. He entered France on 23rd July 1915. He was discharged on 5th September 1916 as no longer physically fit for war service. Alfred was awarded a Silver War Badge, and later the 1915 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.

He volunteered in August 1914, and in the following year was drafted to the Western Front. Whilst in this theatre of war he took part in many important engagements in various sectors, and in 1917 was invalided home. As a result he was discharged in the same year as medically unfit for further service. He holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals

Alfred Banford was born in Birmingham in 1885, the son of William and Lucy Banford, Skinner Lane, Birmingham. In 1911 he was employed as a Fitter/Engineer. He enlisted on 1st May 1918 and was discharged on 21st December 1918. Alfred Banford died in Birmingham in 1959 aged 74.
