Further Information About WHEELER George
The following information is courtesy of the researcher of the casualties on the Blockley War Memorials:
The Wheeler family moved to Aston Magna from Moreton-in-Marsh just before or during the Great War. Son George served during the war with the Gloucestershire Regiment and lost his life in action in Flanders.
George was born and baptised in Moreton in Marsh in 1897 as were all the family. His father, also George, was a labourer. George junior was at home in Moreton in 1901, and also in 1911, when his father was working as an iron worker in a foundry and he himself as a farm boy. At some point, presumably in 1915 or 1916, he enlisted at Stow on the Wold in the Gloucestershire Regiment. His military documents have not been identified and presumably have not survived, but there are other surviving records. George served in the 8th Battalion, which was formed in September 1914, part of the new armies. It moved to France in July 1915. All that is at present known about George’s service is that he died in action in June 1916 at the age of 19.
It is not known for certain when the Wheeler family moved to Aston Magna. They were in Moreton in 1911, and in Aston Magna when George was listed on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission record, presumably around 1922.
