Henry Wheatley was born in Broadheath, Worcestershire in c1885 – there appears to be no record of his birth in the General Register Office Indexes under Worcestershire although his place of birth is given as Hallow/Broadheath on the 1891 and 1911 census as well as on his service papers. He enlisted as Private 7531 in the Worcestershire Regiment on 20th January 1903 when he gave his age as 18 years and his occupation as a gardener. Harry was 5 feet 6½ inches tall with a fresh complexion, brown eyes and dark brown hair. After serving 3 years during which time he spent 18 months in South Africa, 3 months in Ceylon, he was transferred to the Army Reserve on 31st January 1906. He married Minnie Wheeler, spinster, on 6th April 1907 in Alcester Parish Church and the couple had 4 children: John Henry, born 11th November 1907, Eva Gladys born 31st December 1908, Norman Frederick born October 1911 and Harry George born 14th August 1914. Henry was mobilised on 5th August 1914 and then discharged as no longer physically fit for war service on 28th September 1914.

The following information has been researched and transcribed by Hallow History Group:
Harry is first mentioned in the Parish News in September 1914 as ‘in active service’. He was invalided home early in 1915, returning to his regiment shortly after, but then he contracted pneumonia and, in his weakened state was unable to withstand the illness, and died. Reported in the Parish News of March 1915, second son of Mr and Mrs Wheatley of Poplar Cottages. He had 1 brother and 2 step brothers.
