Raymond Weaver was born in 1915, one of 5 children and the 2nd son of George and Susan (nee Spilsbury) Weaver. According to family sources he was known to family and friends by his second name, John. He attended Martley School and after leaving school he took employment as a gardeners boy at Kenswick Manor. Raymond enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters and was posted overseas in April 1944. He was wounded shortly afterwards and later died of his wounds. His mother never got over his death.
Berrow’s Worcester Journal, Saturday 17th June 1944:
Wichenford Man Dies of Wounds
Private R.J. Weaver, Sherwood Foresters, second son of Mr and Mrs G.R. Weaver, of Kings Green, Wichenford, died in Italy on 5 June as a result of wounds sustained early in May. Private Weaver who was 19, went abroad in April.
A memorial service will be held at Wichenford Church at 11 a.m. on Sunday.
