The 1st and 2nd Royal Marine Battalions were amalgamated to form the Royal Marine Battalion in April 1918, and was part of the 118th Brigade of the 63rd (Royal Naval) Division. On the 30th September, during the Battle of the Canal du Nord (27th September – 1st October 1918), the 63rd Division was trying to advance eastwards in the area of Cambrai.
