DEATH OF PRIVATE DONALD STALLARD
Only a month afterwards the village suffered a further loss with the death in action Pte Donald Stallard in Tunisia. He was originally posted as missing and confirmation of his death was not received until the end of the year. Before joining up he had lived with his sister, Mrs Derrett, at the Severn Stoke Stores. After initial training he was posted to the 5th Battalion of the Sherwood Foresters, part of 139th Infantry Brigade which was sent to follow up the successful landing operation of the 1st Army in Algeria. The brigade, together with units of the Parachute Regiment, were very soon in action, defending a strong point called Tamera near the Tunisian coast. It was here, on 13th March, that young Stallard was killed. It was as a result of the action at Tamera that the Germans thereafter referred to the Parachute Regt as The Red Devils.
