Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral.
William Joseph Rutter enlisted as a Private in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 12th April 1915 at Toronto, Ontario. On his attestation form he gave his date of birth as 21st May 1888 in Worcestershire, England, his next of kin as his mother, Emma Rutter of 96 Bird Avenue, Toronto and his trade as enamelling. William was 5 feet 5¾ inches tall with a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. On his medical history sheet it was noted that his teeth were not good.
William sailed from Montreal Canada on 17th August 1915 on the S.S. Hesperian. was posted overseas on 18th November 1915 and was promoted to Corporal on 17th June 1916 and then to Sergeant on 31st August 1916. William was killed in action on 4th September 1916. His medals and memorial cross were sent to his mother in 1920 when she resided at Ivy Cottage, Staplehill, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England.
