He was registered at birth in 1895 as Howard George Portman. On 1901 census Howard aged 5, lived with his parents Michael W. and Harriet Portman and his siblings in Evesham Road. On the 1911 census Howard Portman, aged 15, born in Crabbs Cross, Shop assistant, lived with his mother Harriet Portman and siblings, at 55 Archer Road, Redditch.
