The following information is courtesy of Hartin Partington’s grandson, Peter Livett:
My grandfather certainly served with the South Lancashire Regiment as a 2nd Lieutenant, in Palestine and France, and it was in France that he was wounded, not as I thought in Palestine. He was checking out a windmill, felt it was a dangerous location, and just as he was leaving it was hit by a shell and exploded, wounding him at the base of his spine, but killing the Major who was with him. What saved my grandfather’s life was the thick undervest he was wearing and which had been sent out to him by his wife. He was shortly to go on leave, so thought he ought to wear it at least once before returning home!!
