An entry in the parish book of St Edmund, Stoulton for 1917 reads:
A memorial service was held in the church on 6th January for Alfred Merriman who died aged 23 at the base hospital in Rouen of measles and pneumonia.  He served in the Dardanelles, was wounded once and invalided home from France on one occasion.

Bromsgrove Weekly Messenger, 3rd February 1917:
A.J. Merriman of Worcester, 20891, Worcestershire Regiment appears in a listing of those who have died of wounds.
