Herbert Huckfield was born in 1891 in Worcester, the son of William and Elizabeth Huckfield (nee Tarrant) who had married in 1874. Herbert attended St Barnabas Boys School and in December 1900 he was one of a number of pupils who received a prize for regular and punctual attendance. On the 1901 and 1911 censuses the family lived in Astwood Road and Herbert’s father worked as a railway shunter. Little had changed by 1911 when census details revealed William and Elizabeth had been married for 36 years and had produced 13 children, 11 of whom were still living. Herbert is recorded as being employed as a house painter. Later the same year he married Laura Clarke in Worcester with the marriage being registered in the June quarter 1911. Herbert enlisted as a Corporal in the Lancashire Fusiliers and was killed in action on 26th July 1916.
