On the 1901 census Joseph, aged 5, lived with his widowed father, Charles Harris, sisters Mary Ann Harris aged 8, Leah Harris aged 3 and his brother George Harris aged 7, at Cripplegate, Stratford Road, Shipston on Stour. His father was a Builders Carter and he employed a housekeeper. On the 1911 census Joseph was a servant working for Samuel Stanley, farmer, The Orchards, Ebrington, Chipping Camden.
