Howard Giles was born in Worcester in 1895, the son of George Henry and Emily Giles (nee Parker) who married in 1881 in Somerset. In 1901 George and Emily and their 7 children comprising 2 daughters and 5 sons lived in Portland Villas in the parish of St Barnabas. George and his older son, Harvey, both worked on the railway. By 1911 George and Emily had been married 29 years and had produced 9 children, 7 of whom were still living. Four sons, one being Howard, and a daughter still lived at home with their parents at 26 Rainbow Hill, Worcester. After war broke out, Howard enlisted as a Private in the Worcestershire Yeomanry and he quickly rose to the rank of Corporal. He was sent with his battalion in November 1915 to take part in the final stages of the campaign in the Balkans. After withdrawing from Gallipoli in December 1915 the battalion returned to Egypt. They were to form part of the defence of the Suez Canal and it was here on Easter Sunday, 23rd April 1916 that they came under a ferocious onslaught from Turkish troops. Howard Giles was killed in action during the attack.
