Leonard Garland was the son of Thomas and Frances Garland who were living at 15 Wood Street, Wollaston, in 1914. He was one of five brothers serving in the war. He attended Wollaston C. of E. School and was a member of the Roman Catholic church in Stourbridge. For a while he was employed by Lunt Bros. He then emigrated to Canada in 1912 and in August 1915, having been turned down by the Stourbridge Recruiting Officer, he volunteered for the Quebec Regiment. In 1916 they were in Flanders and he was seriously wounded at St. Eloi. He was brought home to the Duchess of Connaught Canadian Hospital at Taplow near Reading but died there on the 24th May 1916.

Leonard Herbert Garland enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on 5th August 1915 at Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Canada. On his attestation form he gave his date of birth as 24th August 1888 in Wollaston, England, his next of kin as Thomas Garland, Wollaston, England and his occupation as a gardener. Leonard was 5 feet 5 inches tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes and light brown hair.

The Canada Commonwealth War Graves Registers record the following information on Private Leonard Garland: Died of wounds on 24th May 1916 at the Duchess of Connaught Canadian Red Cross Hospital, Taplow.
Buried in Taplow Cemetery. Wooden Cross erected. Body exhumed from a Common Grave in Taplow Churchyard & re-interred in Cliveden Burial Ground, given to the military. Authorised by Major the Hon. Waldorf Astor M.P.
Separate Grave. Grave marked €œC€ on plan of the Cemetery. Permanent Memorial erected by Major the Hon. Waldorf Astor. (Flat Stone with inscription.)
