Charles Garbett enlisted in the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on 24th July 1915 in Toronto, Canada. On his attestation form he gave his date of birth as 19th September 1873 in Droitwich, Worcestershire, England, his occupation as a dyer and his next of kin as his wife, Alice Garbett, 5 Paling Cottages, Lower Wyche, Malvern, Worcestershire. Charles was 5 feet 5½ inches tall with a medium dark complexion, brown eyes and dark hair with grey.
Charles sailed from Halifax, Canada on S.S. Empress of Britain on 29th March 1916, arriving in Liverpool, England on 9th April 1916. He proceeded overseas with his unit on 8th June 1916, arriving in France on 9th June. On 12th August 1916 Charles was admitted to No 13 General Hospital, Boulogne with gun shot wounds to his head, left leg and foot. He died of wounds on 15th August 1916.

The Canada War Graves Registers (Circumstances of Casualty) records the following information on Private Charles Garbett:
“Died of Wounds”. (Gun shot wound scalp and left leg) At No. 13 General Hospital Boulogne.
Appears in the Worcester/Worcestershire Roll of Honour Book for army casualties located in Worcester Cathedral.

Pte C Garbett, serving with a Canadian Battalion, who was formerly employed at the Tudor Hotel has been severely wounded in the head. His wife lives at the Wyche.

Pte Charles Garbett, has died in hospital at Boulogne – he suffered a gunshot wound to the head and left leg.
