Ralph Elcock was born on 27th June 1897. He entered Form III as a Day Scholar at King Edward VI Grammar School on 15th September 1910. At the time of his admission to the school his father is recorded as Joseph Wood Elcock, a Maltster and Corn Dealer and the family resided at 176 High Street, Stourbridge. This was later amended to 62 Hagley Road. Ralph had previously been educated at Dudley Grammar School. He left King Edward VI Grammar School from Form IV on 4th December 1912 and took employment in farming in Canada.

Ralph Elcock sailed from Liverpool, England in 1912 on the S.S. Lake Champlain, arriving in Quebec, Canada on 6th July 1912. On the passenger manifesto his age is given as 15 and his occupation as farming.

Ralph Elcock enlisted in the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Force on 24th September 1914 at Valcartier, Canada. On his attestation form he gave his date of birth as 27th June 1895 in Dudley, Worcestershire, England, his marital status as single, his next of kin as J.W. Elcock, 219, Atlantic Avenue, Winnipeg and his occupation as a furniture salesman. Ralph was 5 feet 9 inches tall with a fresh complexion, blue eyes and dark brown hair.

The Canada War Graves Registers (Circumstances of Casualty) records the following information on Trooper Ralph Elcock:
€œKilled in Action€
He was instantly killed about 4 p.m. on March 23rd 1918, by an enemy machine gun bullet, whilst the regiment was withdrawing from Faillouel, to take up a position on the North edge of the Bois De Frieres.

Killed in action. Body left in Enemy hands. Vimy Memorial. Next of Kin: Mrs J.W. Elcock (mother), c/o Frank Elcock, 8 Harvard Avenue, Ottawa S., Ontario.
