John Dolphin enlisted as Private 6846 for one year of service in the York and Lancaster Regiment at Pontefract, Yorkshire on 17th January 1900. He was born in Feckenham, Worcestershire and gave his age as 27 years 6 months and his occupation as a Shunter. He stated he was already in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion of the York and Lancaster Regiment. John was 5 feet 10 inches tall with a swarthy complexion, grey eyes and dark brown hair. His next of kin was his father, Mr D. Dolphin, Feckenham, Worcestershire. John served in South Africa from 17th February 1900 to 17th May 1901 and returned to England on 18th May 1901. He was discharged from the army on 25th May 1901 on the termination of his engagement.
