Joseph Cartwright enlisted in the 7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in 1912 in Dudley when he gave his place of birth as the parish of St Thomas, Dudley Worcestershire and his age as 17 years 7 months. At the time of his enlistment he was resident at 18 Allcroft St, Tividale, Tipton. Joseph had two brothers, Richard and David, and one sister, Lydia Underwood, nee Cartwright.
Joseph embarked for overseas service from Folkestone on 31st March 1915, arriving in Boulogne, France the following day. In May 1915 he received 7 days field punishment and the loss of 2 days pay for overstaying his leave by 24 hours. The following month he received 21 days field punishment for not complying with an order. He was reported missing on 22nd July 1916, on 19th December 1916 this was amended to killed in action on 21st July 1916. His possessions were sent to his sister Lydia Underwood, 2 Walford, Street, Tividale, Tipton, Staffordshire.
