Charles Burke enlisted in the Royal Engineers for the duration of the war on 7th September 1915 in London. On his attestation paper he gave his age as 43 years, his address as 7 Water Lane, Newport, Salop and his occupation as a labourer. He served in France from 13th September 1915 to 1st November 1915, arriving back in England on 2nd November 1915 after developing bronchitis. He was discharged as medically unfit on the basis of debility, shortness of breath on exertion and being ‘a very debilitated working man whose real age is 50’. Charles was 5 feet 6½ inches tall with light blue eyes and grey hair.
