William was born in Worcester in 1898, one of eight children born to Harry and Ada Brown. The family was living at 5 Inglethorpe Square when he enlisted in the Worcestershire Regiment on 9th February 1915 giving his age as 19 when in fact he was just 17. He entered the theatre of war on 19th September 1915 and saw action at Gallipoli before being sent to France. He was killed in action at Contalmaison during a German bombardment of the trenches.
