Further Information About BILLINGHAM Frank

1. Frank Billingham was born on 3rd September 1898 and baptised at St Mary’s Church, Abberley on 16th October 1898. He was the fourth child of George and Alice Mary Billingham who ran the village shop next door to the Manor Arms in the square. Frank started at Abberley School on 9th June 1902, receiving a 95% attendance certificate four years later in 1906. He left school at the age of 14 on 17th July 1912 and became an apprentice in a Birmingham Gun Factory.

On 25th August 1918 Frank’s battalion was in position in the front line trenches at St Leger. The advance was timed for 04.30 but the troops on their left and right failed to advance as ordered due to a misunderstanding over the time. The situation was further compounded by thick fog which led to confusion of where the troops actually were and resulted in men running into thick wire and heavy machine gun fire, resulting in heavy casualties one of whom was Frank Billingham.
