George Rupert Band was born on 26th March 1921 in Richard’s Castle, Herefordshire. Before joining up in 1941 he was employed as a van driver. George was posted to 23 Operational Training Unit in Pershore. On 29th May he was one of 3 RAF personnel who went along for a joy ride on Wellington X3704 which was taking part in a fly-past during Wings for Victory week in Pershore. Towards the end of the event the aircraft lost and engine and wing over the cricket ground causing it to crash into local buildings.
