Arthur Baggott enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps on 17th December 1914 at Stourbridge. On his attestation form he gave his address as 16 Heath Lane, Old Swinford, Stourbridge, his age as 19 years and his occupation as a Blacksmith Striker. He embarked at Southampton on 4th October 1916, arrived in Rouen, France on 5th October 1916 and joined his battalion in the field on 19th October 1916. Arthur’s service records reveal that he was wounded on 31st July 1917 with a gunshot wound to his arm. He re-joined his company on 7th August 1917, had two weeks leave to the UK, returning to France on 22nd November 1917 and was admitted to hospital at Etaples, France on 28th November 1917 with wounds to his hand and knee. On 29th March 1918 Arthur was admitted to hospital for treatment for boils, re-joining his company on 28th April 1918. At some point he was wounded once more, dying from his wounds on 21st September 1918.

In November 1921 his father, George Henry Baggott, 18 Mill Lane, Stourbridge completed an Army form listing Arthur’s two brothers, Edward aged 23 and George Henry aged 21, and his two sisters, Mabel Edith Southall aged 26 and Dorothy aged 11.

Arthur Baggott has no known grave, the photograph available shows his name on Vis-en-Artois Memorial.
